House Extension, The Hague

This project is a ground-floor extension for a young family who recently moved from Amsterdam to The Hague. While the spacious garden was a key selling point of their new home, they quickly realized that additional living space was essential for their growing family.

The existing layout had a small, cramped kitchen and a long, disconnected living room. Our design solution extended the ground floor by 4 meters into the garden, creating an open and functional layout where the kitchen becomes the heart of the home. The new, spacious kitchen connects to the living room directly, featuring a large island where the couple enjoys cooking and dining together.

To enhance natural light in the deep floor plan, we introduced a skylight in the new roof, complementing the wide glass doors that open fully to the garden, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. On sunny days, the living space extends effortlessly into the outdoors, creating a fluid and inviting atmosphere.

Thoughtful Design & Materials

The new façade features anthracite aluminum doors, blending subtly with the existing architecture while maintaining maximum transparency without becoming a glass box. To ensure continuity, we used matching brickwork, preserving the home’s original character.

A new ground-floor bathroom was strategically placed in an area with limited daylight, efficiently utilizing the existing footprint and enhancing the functionality of the home. Despite the extension, the garden remains spacious, offering room for a green outdoor area, a dining space, and a garden shed.

This project is a testament to smart, family-friendly design, optimizing every square meter to create a bright, open, and practical living space.

Warm, Minimalist Interior Design

For the interior, we chose a warm and bright color palette to enhance natural light and create an inviting atmosphere. The minimalist kitchen acts as a clean, white canvas, allowing the daily activities of family life to take center stage.

Understanding the couple’s desire for a tidy and uncluttered space, we integrated hidden storage at the back of the kitchen. This allows the front area to remain open, clean, and minimalistic, maintaining a sense of calm and simplicity.

The combination of wood, white, and soft beige tones creates a soothing and timeless aesthetic, making the space feel both elegant and functional. The design also subtly emphasizes the connection to the garden, guiding the eye towards the outdoors and reinforcing the transition between indoor and outdoor living.
