Edge Stadium, Amsterdam
Sustainable Reuse and Transformation
EDGE Stadium in Amsterdam is the result of a visionary transformation of the former Forum complex. Initially built in 2001 with sustainability in mind, the building has been reimagined as a dynamic, modern workplace designed to inspire innovation and collaboration. Located near the Zuidas and the Olympic Stadium, EDGE Stadium is integrated into the heart of Amsterdam, offering a vibrant, green, and flexible environment for businesses and startups alike.
A vision for green design and user-centered spaces
The building’s design has been reshaped to maximize natural light, greenery, and open spaces. The central atrium, once a simple passageway, has been transformed into a lush, green hub, where people can meet, exchange ideas, and feel connected. The atrium’s renovation includes new landscaping, making it the heart of the building. Two office wings were expanded and topped with an additional floor, increasing the building’s size by 30%. A striking pavilion with copper cladding was integrated, making it a key feature of the space.
A harmonious blend of sustainable design, innovative reuse, and collaborative spaces that enhance both functionality and well-being.
Sustainable reuse and circular design
A core principle of the redesign was the reuse of existing materials, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact. The original wooden beams and columns were repurposed, with some finding a new life in other projects. Additionally, the copper from the original pavilion was carefully salvaged and reused elsewhere. Many original wooden window frames were removed, stored, and returned to the building’s new design, ensuring the use of circular materials throughout. The extension was constructed using biobased wood, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability.
Innovative sustainability through technology and design
The project prioritizes both environmental and technological sustainability. In addition to extensive material reuse, EDGE Stadium integrates advanced technologies to enhance its energy efficiency. The building employs a state-of-the-art heating and cooling system that builds upon an innovative system installed in 2001, making it one of the first buildings in Amsterdam to use such a solution. EDGE Stadium holds the highest certifications for sustainability, including BREEAM Excellent and WELL Platinum. It is also the first building in the Netherlands to achieve the R2S Ready2Services certification, recognizing its high level of smart connectivity and digital integration.
A space that promotes social interaction and well-being
EDGE Stadium is designed to encourage social interaction and movement. The atrium is not only a workspace but a social gathering spot, offering spaces for informal meetings, coffee breaks, and healthy lunches. After work, the space comes alive with events such as fitness classes, silent discos, and rehearsals, contributing to the neighborhood’s vibrant atmosphere. The building's design promotes physical well-being, with staircases taking precedence over lifts, encouraging users to move throughout the space. The abundance of natural light, plants, and open spaces enhances mental health and productivity, making EDGE Stadium a true workplace of the future.
