House Renovation, Étretat, France

A thoughtful renovation of a 200-year-old home

Nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Étretat, France, this historic home from 1824 has been carefully updated 200 years later, blending modern comfort with its original charm. The homeowners wanted to make the house more livable and functional, while preserving its authentic character. The renovation focused on a brand-new kitchen, a rear extension, and a refreshed living and dining space, all designed with respect for the home’s rich history.

The renovation paid close attention to the existing architectural details, retaining the beautiful original tile flooring and exposed ceiling beams - elements that give the home its unique character. Every intervention was designed to blend with the old structure, ensuring that the house remains true to its heritage while supporting the needs of modern living.

The compact kitchen was redesigned to maximize functionality and storage, keeping it in harmony with the home’s historic charm. The layout was reimagined to create more space for cooking. By opening the kitchen to the back of the house, natural light now floods the space, making it a brighter, more inviting place to cook and gather.

In a home where every square meter counts, the living and dining room were carefully arranged to balance comfort and practicality. A small but cozy sitting area was created, while the dining table remains the heart of the space, where the family spends most of their time together. The goal was not to fully modernize the home - why change what makes a 200-year-old house so special? Instead, this renovation celebrates its timeless character while ensuring it remains a warm and inviting family home for years to come.
